      These essays are 25 to 30 years old, and so diving into them I wondered if I would find them of historical interest only or possibly simple dated. When Spinrad covers more general topics – the difference between sf and sci-fi, the need for critical standards, etc – there is a sense of familiar territory being gone over once again. Putting yourself back into the time of their original publication is necessary, but even that bit of intellectual time travel is made easy by Spinrad’s lively, o [...]

      Published in 1990 and including essays going back to 1985, this collection has both held up well and aged badly. The critical insights are as valid today as they were when published though they are related to books and films from a previous era. Some of the cultural touchstones do not hold up as well. Consistent references to recreational sex and drug use sound seriouly dated and there are a number of word choices (barbled?) that reek of patchouli and the use of the phrase, "far out man!"
