      This is the first book I have read by this author. It reads like this is part of a series, but can be read as a stand-alone. Bertie Mallowan is a society reporter, in her third week for the L.A. Beacon-Banner. While out covering a society party, she steps out in the hotel gardens to get a breath of fresh air, only to have a man fall down in front of her with blood spurting out his neck. The man whispers something to her just before he dies. It is an interesting tale in which her ex-husband moves [...]

      Bertie is our favorite reporter that finds herself laid off from a real reporting job. She has sunk to the level of being a society reporter. One thing that Bertie doesn't appreciate is "society". At her first event, she finds herself in the middle of a murder investigation. This is a great mystery that is filled with touches of humor and plenty of snark. I especially loved the interplay between Bertie and the men in her life. This book is a great find.
